Snow & terrain
Our region has been found to be one of the top three must visit regions by the National Geographic Traveller Magazine for the quality of our Provincial Parks and Nature Preserves. We are based in the Haute-Gaspésie region at the foothills of the spectacular Chic-Chocs Mountains in the continuation of the Appalachian Mountains. This mountain destination, unique in the northeast, is an exceptional place for enjoying winter sports and particularly backcountry skiing and trekking. Our terrain includes numerous summits over 1,000 m ( 3500 feet ) with steep slopes that offer alpine and tree glade skiing. The snowfall is plentiful and averages 700 cm ( 20 feet ) falling from mid-October to mid-June with maximum coverage usually in January, February and March totalizing an average of more than 300 cm ( 10 feet ) remaining on the ground. The Chic-Chocs ski season can thus easily last some five (5) months per year, from mid-December to mid-May, or nearly 155 days in all, which represents 40% of the year!
