The CSA-1+ is a 3-day introductory course on avalanches which is given in the Chic-Chocs.

The goal of the program is to provide students with an entry-level decision-making framework that can be applied pre-trip and in the field to increase safety margins and maximize fun!

TRAINING DETAILS

Day 1:
Part of the training will take place in class, bring comfortable clothes for indoors. You will also go outside, but without traveling to the field.

Day 2:
You will spend time in the classroom as well as outdoors to familiarize yourself with search and rescue techniques as well as avalanche safety equipment.

Day 3:
You will spend the day in the field putting the course concepts into practice while skiing.

  • You will need your skiing equipment for the duration of the course.

  • The course will be adapted, if necessary, so that it can be given regardless of the weather conditions.

  • Dress warmly, the cold temperatures won't stop us from going outside to play!

  • You will receive a certificate of achievement issued by Ski Chic-Chocs and approved by Avalanche Canada. This is recognized across the country.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

• Interpret the avalanche bulletin, recognize terrain at avalanche risk.
• Structure of the snowpack.
• Know the steps needed to plan and conduct an outing.
• Using the Avaluator.
• Practice proper mountain travel techniques.
• Know how to carry out an autonomous rescue.
• Understand the limits of their training and consider the next steps (CSA 2, level 1 professional).

DAY 1

Part of the training will take place in class, bring comfortable clothes for the interior. You will also go outside, but without moving on the ground.

DAY 2

You will spend time in the classroom as well as outdoors to familiarize yourself with search and rescue techniques as well as avalanche safety equipment.

DAY 3

You will spend the day in the field putting the notions of the course into practice while skiing.

Avalanche safety equipment such as DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector), shovel and probe will be loaned to you for the duration of the activity (if you have your own, bring them).

Bring a lunch for all three days, a 60-minute break is provided for this purpose.

Car transport to the ski area and the Gaspésie Park Discovery and Service Center.

Backcountry skiing or splitboarding equipment.

For major participant: to read and understand before the training. The forms will be completed on site with the trainer, so do not complete before the training.
